Sleep tight Baby infant and child sleep consulting - blog

So this isn't a lecture about how much TV your child should watch or the impact it is or is not having on their development or behaviour. The recommendation is no TV under 2 and limited TV after that but sometimes life with a little one is hard enough without the 'I'm a terrible mother' guilt trip as you point the remote at the screen. My 2.5 year old has been watching a little more TV than I planned for lately (ok maybe 0 hours of TV prior to the age of 5 was a little optimistic on my part) but I won't tell if you don't.

So anyway, let's talk about TV and sleep - that's one area I don't budge on; not for naps or nights. So if your child is having difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep then it's definitely worth considering their screen time. So when there a...

When I worked out that my little boy was a high needs baby it was such a relief to know that his fussiness and anxiety weren't my fault - I wasn't doing anything wrong. It's not about the label as such, it's about understanding that some children are born with temperaments that make it more difficult for their parents to soothe them; harder for them to settle and sleep; likely to find feeding difficult; highly sensitive to change/noise/light/new experiences...and the list goes on. There are ways to support a high needs baby and then toddler and then child...but for me the greatest gift was knowing that it wasn't just me! Here's a great article from 'The Fussy Baby Site' which should help you to be able to identify if your baby has a high needs temperament - you'...

It's that time of year again when the clocks change. Here in the UK the clocks go forward 1 hour on Sunday 29th March. So what does this mean for your little one's sleep? Unfortunately babies and young children don't have the common courtesy to check their watches and adjust their routines; not even those with Gro clocks or the like can be expected to alter timings by themselves unfortunately, so this means there's some work to be done. There are a few choices so I thought it would be helpful to talk them through with you:

1. Do nothing. Really? Well if your child's routine has somehow gotten a bit too early according to your family's schedules (into bed and up for the day too early) then do nothing. Let's say your child goes to bed at 6pm and wakes for the day a...

Happy Mothers' day to all the lovely Mummies out there, with a special mention for mine :) This is my third year of being a Mum for Mothers' day but I still mainly think of it as a day for my own Mum. When I was little there was nothing my Mum couldn't fix for me and that's still the same today. She's always there to talk to and to help me when I need her and nothing is too much trouble (even when she's clearly exhausted and falling asleep 10 minutes into 'call the midwife'). My Mum is also a wonderful Grandmother (we call her Grandmumsy) to my little boy and he clearly loves her, and her homemade jam tarts, very much. Thank you lovely Mummy :)

I hope all you lovely Mummies out there have a wonderful Mothers' Day xx

I haven't always been a sleep consultant...actually it hadn't even crossed my mind before I had my child. Previously I worked in research (developmental and social psychology and education) and teaching (primary, secondary and adults) however, I've always loved my sleep; 10 hours a night if there was nothing good on TV, perfect. So what if I could never make it through a house party without curling up on the sofa for a snooze :) Then I got pregnant and sleep went downhill. Then I was in labour for 2 days and sleep went out the window. Then I had an extremely sensitive, high needs baby with colic, acid reflux, cows’ milk protein intolerance, tongue tie and feeding difficulties and a very strong startle reflex. He was instantly the love of my life but in my shell...
